6 June from Our Viewpoint

Monday... Kansas City Area

Today was supposed to be relaxing, and for the most part it was. But still, at the end of the day, we find ourselves exhausted. Strange how that happens.

We spent the day visiting different church history sites in the Kansas City area. First stop was the Church visitor center Independence. We spent an hour or so learning about the significance of this area to the past, present, and future of the Church. I can imagine, after seeing how beautiful it is here in Northwestern Missouri, that some of the Saints probably thought Salt Lake City was a much less desirable place to build Zion. And yet they sacrificed everything to get there because the prophet of God told them to go. In addition to the Visitor Center we briefly walked on the dedicated temple site.

Our next stop was the Liberty jail. It was very interesting to see the conditions under which Joseph and his brother and friends were living when he received some of the great revelations of our dispensation. It puts into perspective that even the most difficult circumstances we've experienced are not so bad in comparison.

Then it was off to Far West. At one point this was a thriving community with businesses, homes, and about 5000 residents. Now there is nothing but a monument, the original corner stones of the temple site, and a small bathroom facility (thank goodness for the bathroom facility). The road to the site is hilly and windy. Sophia got out of the car, headed to the temple site and promptly threw up. Of course.

Only three sites but spiritually and physically exhausting. We're off to Hannibal on Tuesday.
